The TOEFL is a difficult test, four-hour exam. You cannot „fail“ the TOEFL in the literal sense. The evaluation is reflected in the so-called Score Report, which contains the number of points achieved. Once you have achieved the score required for admission to the university you wish to study at, it is not necessary to take the test again. You can take the TOEFL as often as you like.

The Academy of Languages has been organising the TOEFL test since 2006. Every year, 300 participants take it at our examination centre.

TOEFL for students and high school graduates

The test is usually performed by Students or high school graduates filed, which Study abroad aspire to. Universities in the USA in particular require the TOEFL as proof when applying. However, more and more universities in Germany are also requiring the TOEFL if the degree programme is taught in English.

Process and content of the TOEFL exam

Obwohl der TOEFL Test internetbasiert ist, ist es jedoch wichtig, sich auf die Art der Fragen vorzubereiten, mit denen Sie in jedem Abschnitt konfrontiert werden. not allowing it to be put down in the safe space of one's own four walls. At our examination centre, twelve participants will usually take the test simultaneously.

On the day of the exam, you should arrive at the test centre half an hour before the test begins. The TOEFL team will escort you to your seat, where everything will be ready for you.

Reading, listening, speaking, and writing – these are the four skills that the TOEFL test measures.
The reading task will be started. The texts you receive will cover a very broad range of topics: from agriculture and iron smelting among the Bantu to water reserves on Mars to cultural history in antiquity or other subjects.

Before the short break, you must complete the listening section. You will need to use the headset for this for the first time. Topics from all areas will be covered here too. It is possible that the speakers may have an accent and speak very quickly. The questions will become progressively more complicated.

After the break, the „Speaking“ subtest follows. For this, you will need to put on the headset again and position the microphone so that you can speak into it clearly. You do not need to raise your voice to speak your answers. The microphones are very sensitive and will pick up even quietly spoken sentences. As you will be completing the test with other participants in our TOEFL Lab, you should be prepared for some background noise. The topics again cover a wide range of areas. From environmental protection and socially relevant issues to arguing for a particular topic, anything is possible. Your text should be 300 words long.

After approximately four hours, the TOEFL test is finished. After ten days, you can view your score report online. The dispatch of results begins four to six weeks after the exam date. There is no way to fail the TOEFL test. You will receive a score commensurate with your language proficiency, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. After two years, you may need to retake the test, as the certificate loses its validity at this point.

TOEFL TEST PROCEDURE

This is how your TOEFL test proceeds

Although the TOEFL test is internet-based, it cannot be taken in the privacy of your own home. In our test centre, up to twelve participants usually take the test at the same time.

Arrival at the examination centre

On the day of the test, you should arrive at the test centre approximately 30 minutes before the test begins. The TOEFL team will welcome you and escort you to your seat, where everything is already prepared for you.

The test procedure

Reading, listening, speaking, and writing are the four skills that the TOEFL test measures.

  1. Reading
The reading task will begin. The texts cover a wide range of topics – from Bantu agriculture and iron smelting to water resources on Mars, the cultural history of antiquity, and many other subjects.
  2. Listening
Before the short break, you will complete the listening section. For this, you will need your headset. The listening texts cover a wide variety of topics. Sometimes the speakers will speak with different accents and at a fast pace. The questions will become more challenging as you progress.
  3. Speaking
After the break comes the speaking section. For this, put on the headset again and position the microphone. You do not need to raise your voice – the microphones are very sensitive and reliably pick up even softly spoken answers. As several participants are taking the test at the same time, there will be a normal background noise. The topics range from environmental protection and societal issues to argumentative tasks.
  4. Writing
The exam concludes with the writing section. Here, too, you can expect a variety of topics. Your English text should be around 300 words long.

After the test

After about four hours, the TOEFL test is finished.

  • After about 10 days, you can view your score report online.
  • The dispatch of the official results commences after 4 to 6 weeks.
  • There is no pass or fail on the TOEFL test. You receive a score that corresponds to your language proficiency level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
  • The TOEFL certificate is valid for two years. After that, the test must be retaken if necessary.
Good to know

The content of the TOEFL test covers a broad spectrum of academic, cultural, and social topics. It tests your English language skills – not your specialist knowledge.
